Project Management Is Not For Everyone - 1484 Words
Project management is not for everyone. To thrive in this field, one needs numerous technical and management skills, and a certain amount of experience in the relevant industry. Do I have what it takes to be a successful project manager? The answer seems to be ââ¬Ënoââ¬â¢. This is because there is a difference between being a project manager and being a successful one. I would rather be in the second bracket. And to achieve that, I need to not only improve my skills, but also develop new ones as I make my way up the ladder. The job of a project manager in simple words is getting people to perform work to fulfill the requirements of a project within a certain time and budget. Therefore, it necessary to have good people skills and I agree with Lewis (2007) that people skills is the biggest attribute a person must have. The reason is purely because without good man management skills, it will be very hard to get everyone moving in the same direction even if one is brilliant at everything else. On the other hand, someone who knows how to deal with people but who does not know everything will always find a way. Either by having someone teaching him or he will merely hand over that particular activity to an expert. Reflecting on the two years that I have been working as a civil engineer, and taking into account the importance of interpersonal skills that a project manager must possess, letââ¬â¢s see how proficient I am in using these skills and how I can improve. Stereotypes on Intercultural Communication â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.com
Queston: Discuss about the Stereotypes on Intercultural Communication. Answer: Introduction: The spread of globalisation has changed the world of business to a great extent. Globalisation has enabled people and organisations from all corners of the world to interact with each other, form business relations and expand their market reach, which can help them in achieving a competitive edge in the market. The spread of globalisation has also made it difficult for business organisations to survive in the market because of the exponential increase in competition. As a result, business organisations are looking forward to expand their businesses overseas in order to achieve market competencies and ensure a long term survival in the market. Overseas expansion involves interacting with individuals that belong to different cultural backgrounds and have their own morals, ethics, values, language, etc., which governs their behaviour during business interactions (Kreuz Roberts, 2017). Therefore, understanding the culture of an overseas partner is considered to be crucial for those orga nisations that are looking forward to expand their business management overseas. Culture is defined as the set of morals, ethics, values, language, cuisines, etc. that governs the social conduct of an individual or a group of people (Heine, 2015). Cultural stereotyping is referred to the condition when one person forms an opinion about another person on the basis of who that person is, where is the person from, which language does that person speaks, etc., without actually getting to know the person, etc. (Schnurr, et al., 2017). There are a number of cultural stereotypes that exist till date, such as all people with a Jewish background are greedy, Mexican people are lazy and migrate into America illegally, all black people outside of the United States are poor, etc. There are a countless number of stereotypes associated with different cultures in the world, out of which, some are valid while some are completely invalid and have originated as a result of false perceptions of people. It is better to rely on stereotypes than to enter into a relationship with someone from another culture without any idea of what they believe in. To conclude whether the statement is correct or not, it is important to discuss the merits as well as the demerits of the statement. Let us start by discussing the merits of cultural stereotypes in cross cultural communication management: First of all, relying upon stereotypes while entering into a relationship with someone from a different culture can be beneficial for a person that has negligible knowledge about the cultural preferences of the other person. There can be certain situations where a person might not have the time to study the culture of another person in depth. In such cases, relying on cultural stereotypes can shape the way for communication to a certain extent. Further, relying upon cultural stereotypes can sometimes be helpful in making quick judgements and fast decisions (Peng, 2010). Secondly, cultural stereotypes can help in identifying people into groups and predicting their reactions and decisions. It can help a person in forming expectations and making communication more predictable and easier to understand. Thirdly, stereotypes in cultural communication is sometimes considered to be an equalizer because people belonging to a particular group definitely have something in common. Stereotypes ca n thus be used to face issues related to intercultural communication rather than running away from them. Cultural stereotypes can definitely have certain truth attached to them and by addressing these issues, stereotypes can be used to eliminate barriers to communication Fourthly, cultural stereotypes can sometimes be used by individuals to explain social events as stereotypes can help in identifying certain typical characteristics of a cluster. On the other hand, most of the people believe that cultural stereotypes can cause more harm in cross cultural communication than their potential benefits. Some of the negative aspects of cultural stereotypes are discussed below: First of all, cultural stereotypes can have a great impact on the organisational behaviour of the employees. In cross-cultural communication or in multinational organisations, it is often observed that certain employees have a tendency to shape their behaviour with other employees on the basis of stereotypes that they have regarding a particular group of people. This can make them bully others if they perceive their culture as recessive or less assertive. According to the socio-technical approach and the situational approach under the administrative theory of organisational behaviour, an organisation is composed of a social system, technical system and an environment and for the success of an organisation, it is crucial that there is a strong relation between all these systems (Bin, n.d.). Stereotypes can instil a feeling of inferiority or superiority in the system and it can become difficult to establish a strong relation between these systems. Relying upon cultural stereotypes while entering into a relationship with a person belonging to a different culture can prove to be a failure because the judgement about his or her culture can be completely misguided and incorrect. In such cases, there are greater chances that one might end up offending the other person, which makes it difficult to establish a strong and long lasting relation with the person. Further, stereotypes can also result in employees mistreating or abusing those whom they perceive to be inferior to them, based on stereotypes(Lyons Kashima, 2001). Secondly, according to most of the cultural stereotypes, people belonging to a particular culture have a similar dressing sense, values, beliefs, preferences, social conduct, etc. This belief can act as a barrier in cross cultural communication because people having the same dressing sense can feel differently towards different situations and actions (Lyons Kashima, 2001). As a result, relying upon stereotypes can decrease the effectiveness of cross cultural communication. Furthermore, a popular notion saying Dont judge a book by its cover stresses on the face that appearance cannot be enough to completely understand who a person really is. Thirdly, cultural stereotypes can sometimes act as the biggest barriers to communication and might prevent two people belonging to different cultures from interacting at all. A person might not want to interact with another person because of his or her assumption about the other person, which is obviously based upon cultural stereotypes that she or he might have read or heard about. Fourthly, cultural stereotypes can sometimes result in prejudice. Cultural stereotypes can sometimes make people protect their self-esteem by making them feel that they are a part of a superior group of people (Bin, n.d.) . As a result, such people, in order to satisfy their feeling of superiority, can apply negative stereotypes while communication with others. For example, American managers believe that their Asian colleagues do not possess leadership skills and are not assertive while at work while the Israelis think that businessmen from India are not trustworthy and do not provide the correct information during business dealings. Basing ones behaviour or social conduct on such negative stereotypes can offend the other person, who might be trustworthy and is sharing all the information in a business deal management. Coming to the statement, having no knowledge about a persons culture or belief and still entering into a relationship with that person is a tricky situation because establishing a relation without having knowledge about each others cultural values is not possible in the first place. Even if somehow it does become possible, the foundation of relation established between the two parties will not be solid enough to make it a long lasting one as they would definitely end up offending each other because of the lack of understanding. On the other hand, relying upon stereotypes while entering into cross cultural communication can definitely help a person in identifying certain dos and donts, which would ultimately reduce the chances of offending the other person as a result of the lack of cultural knowledge (Ting-Toomey, 2012). Further, the foundation of the relation can be stronger in this case and as the relation becomes stronger, each of the party will have opportunities to learn more ab out each other and their beliefs, which would further reinforce their relation. Cultural stereotypes receive different reviews from different people and their reliability in cross cultural communication and establishing business relations is highly debatable. Where some people are of the belief that cultural stereotypes can act as a barrier to cross cultural communication and are trying their best to discover methods that can help in eliminating cultural stereotypes, others believe that cultural stereotypes have been formed over a period of time by closely observing the social conduct of a group of people and can be reliable in cross cultural communication as they help in making quick judgements and decisions (Spencer-Rodgersa McGovern, n.d.). To conclude, it is actually beneficial to rely on stereotypes rather than entering into a relationship with a person from another culture with no knowledge about his or her beliefs or preferences because stereotypes cannot just help in making a judgement about the other person, but can also help in shaping ones own behavi our and communication style while interacting with others. Having some knowledge about the culture of another person, even if it is based on cultural stereotypes, can actually help a person in gaining confidence and actually initiating a conversation. On the other hand, entering into a relationship with another person without having any knowledge about his or her beliefs cannot help a person in taking a conversation much far. Therefore, it is definitely better to rely upon certain stereotypes during cross cultural communication rather than entering into a relation with someone without actually having any knowledge about his or her culture and beliefs. What Are UTM Parameters Plus How to Properly Use Them
What are UTM parameters? Theyre extra tags that you add to a URL to help you track and analyze traffic on your website.Although the term may sound technical, UTM parameters are simple and easy to use, while containing immense analytical power. In this article, weââ¬â¢ll explain what UTM parameters are in more detail and then show you how to use UTM parameters to uncover meaningful insights about your website and marketing channels. https://themeisle.com/?utm_source=facebookHere, the UTM tag is utm_source=facebookà and is used to track a possible source of traffic. In this case, the source we are interested in is Facebook. You can also add more tags to track additional data, like a specific post that you made on Facebook. For example:https://themeisle.com/?utm_source=facebookutm_medium=social-mediautm_campaign=what-are-utm-parameters-postMore on what all these UTM parameters mean in a second.UTMs can be used to see which marketing platformsà or campaigns are working best for you, and to track the value of social marketing campaigns. You can also use them on your own site. For example, you could see how well specific blog posts work at converting visitors into customers. This means you can generate precise data on where your traffic is coming from. Youll also be able to see what avenues users take to convert. Furthermore, you can more easily compare posts (akin to A/B testing) to better know whats working for you and what isnt.In addition, with UTMs you can measure return on investment (ROI), refine your social media strategy, track influencer marketing, and much more. Well discuss these in more detail below. How to use UTM parameters (in 4 steps)At this point, you might be worried about potentially causing a search engine optimization (SEO) problem by tweaking your URLs. Fortunately, you dont have to attach UTM parameters to your links manually. Instead, you can use a UTM generator to ensure your links are error-free and optimized. Lets take a look!1. Set up Google AnalyticsThe first step is to create a Google Analytics account so that you can log and analyze UTM tags. The good news is that weve talked about this previously, and have also given you a walkthrough of the interface. If this is your first time using Google Analytics, these guides will come in handy ââ¬â especially if youre overwhelmed by the screens you see.Once youve set up your account, grabbed your tracking ID, and linked your analytics with your WordPress site, youll be ready for the next step. To make this last aspect easier, and help you better integrate analytics data with your WordPress website, we recommend installing a plugin such as MonsterInsights. Google Analytics Dashboard Plugin for WordPress by MonsterInsights Author(s): Google Analytics Campaign URL Builder.Once you navigate here, youll see several fields enabling you to input the website URL you want to track and your parameters. The first four fields are required informationâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦and there a re five different UTM parameters you can choose from. Lets quickly go over what they are:utm_source. The source identifies where the click has come from (i.e. the referral website), and is required.utm_medium. This states whether a link was within an email, was a cost-per-click (CPC) link, and more. Again, this is a required field.utm_campaign. This required field helps when carrying out keyword analysis. Its simply an identifier for the campaign. For example, a specific social media post or the title of a guest post.utm_term. Youll only use this parameter when conducting paid search campaigns, and lets you state a keyword term (such as wordpress+themes.)utm_content. Finally, this parameter is used when multiple ads or links point to the same URL, in order to help differentiate them.Once youve filled in your information, the tool will automatically generate the properly-tagged URL for you:This is the link youll use in your social posts or other promotional channels. You may want to shorten it for aesthetic or administrative reasons using a service such as Bitly.à As users interact with this link, the data will be sent to your Google Analytics account ââ¬â which is where well head to next!3. Track campaigns with UTM parametersGoogle Analytics provides practically all of the information you need to analyze your campaigns. Within your dashboard, head to theà Reportsà section, then navigate toà Acquisition Campaignsà All Campaigns:Youll see a list of campaigns, and a selection of other data, grouped by Acquisition (which breaks down the numbers furtherà by users, new users, and sessions), Behavior (drilling down to Bounce Rate, Pages Per Session, and Average Session Duration), and Conversions. Here, youll see different columns based on the Goals youve set within Google Analytics. However, there will usually be a Conversion Rate percentage to look for. This essentially gives you almost everything you need to assess a given campaign ââ¬â footfal l, where the traffic has come from, and whether theyre captivated. The final step is to dig into these figures.Step 4: Analyze the data the UTM parameters provideThe last step is perhaps the most important: analyzing your data. After all, its why you want to add UTM parameters in the first place. While you could simply do this via the Google Analytics dashboard, you may find it easier to export this information as a PDF, Google Sheet, Excel spreadsheet, or .csv file. You can do this in Google Analytics, via the Export link:Once youve retrieved your data, youre afforded some flexibility with it. For instance, you can use UTM parameters to measure the ROI of your social media posts, because you now have explicit data showing which social strategies are most cost effective. The data can also give you a clear picture of which social media posts drive traffic to your site. Furthermore, you can use it to calculate the cost to acquire a lead or customer by tracking the ads and campaigns use rs click, and the overall number that end up converting.UTM parameters are also an effective way to track influencer marketing results. By attaching UTMs to your affiliate links, youll be able to tell if an influencers efforts are paying off on an individual basis. Or, you can use UTM parameters in links to your site that you insert in guest posts, or your author bio at a guest post source. Finally, the last thing well mention about analyzing your data is split testing. Using UTMs in two different social posts provides an effective way to compare their effectiveness. You can then tweak them to improve results ââ¬â for example, trialing how video impacts the conversion rate, and how your audience responds to it.ConclusionUTM parameters provide you with precise data on where your traffic and conversions come from. They can be implemented to measure the performance of your content, and to see which marketing platforms are working best for you.In this piece, weââ¬â¢ve shown you ho w to track your content using UTM parameters. Letââ¬â¢s quickly recap the four steps:Set up Google Analytics.Add UTM parameters to your links.Track campaigns with UTM parameters.Analyze the data the UTM parameters provide. The 15th Century Chinese Explorer Cheng Ho
The 15th Century Chinese Explorer Cheng Ho Decades before Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in search of a water route to Asia, the Chinese were exploring the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific with seven voyages of the Treasure Fleet that solidified Chinese control over much of Asia in the 15th century. The Treasure Fleets were commanded by a powerful eunuch admiral named Cheng Ho. Cheng Ho was born around 1371 in Chinas southwestern Yunan Province (just north of Laos) with the name Ma Ho. Ma Hos father was a Muslim hajji (who had made a pilgrimage to Mecca) and the family name of Ma was used by Muslims in representations of the word Mohammed. When Ma Ho was ten years old (around 1381), he was captured along with other children when the Chinese army invaded Yunan to take control over the region. At the age of 13 he was castrated, as were other young prisoners, and he was placed as a servant in the household of the Chinese Emperors fourth son (out of twenty-six total sons), Prince Zhu Di. Ma Ho proved himself to be an exceptional servant to Prince Zhu Di. He became skilled in the arts of war and diplomacy and served as an officer of the prince. Zhu Di renamed Ma Ho as Cheng Ho because the eunuchs horse was killed in battle outside of a place called Zhenglunba. (Cheng Ho is also Zheng He in the newer Pinyin transliteration of Chinese but hes still most commonly called Cheng Ho). Cheng Ho was also known as San Bao which means three jewels. Cheng Ho, who was said to have been seven feet tall, was given greater power when Zhu Di became emperor in 1402. One year later, Zhu Di appointed Cheng Ho admiral and ordered him to oversee the construction of a Treasure Fleet to explore the seas surrounding China. Admiral Cheng Ho was the first eunuch appointed to such a high military position in China. First Voyage (1405-1407) The first Treasure Fleet consisted of 62 ships; four were huge wood boats, some of the largest ever built in history. They were approximately 400 feet (122 meters) long and 160 feet (50 meters) wide. The four were the flagships of the fleet of 62 ships assembled at Nanjing along the Yangtze (Chang) River. Included in the fleet were 339-foot (103-meter) long horse ships that carried nothing but horses, water ships that carried fresh water for the crew, troop transports, supply ships, and warships for offensive and defensive needs. The ships were filled with thousands of tons of Chinese goods to trade with others during the voyage. In the fall of 1405, the fleet was ready to embark with 27,800 men. The fleet utilized the compass, invented in China in the 11th century, for navigation. Graduated sticks of incense were burned to measure time. One day was equal to 10 watches of 2.4 hours each. Chinese navigators determine latitude through monitoring the North Star (Polaris) in the Northern Hemisphere or the Southern Cross in the Southern Hemisphere. The ships of the Treasure Fleet communicated with one another through the use of flags, lanterns, bells, carrier pigeons, gongs, and banners. The destination of the first voyage of the Treasure Fleet was Calicut, known as a major trading center on the southwestern coast of India. India was initially discovered by Chinese overland explorer Hsuan-Tsang in the seventh century. The fleet stopped in Vietnam, Java, and Malacca, and then headed west across the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka and Calicut and Cochin (cities on the southwest coast of India). They remained in India to barter and trade from late 1406 to the spring of 1407 when they utilized the monsoon shift to sail toward home. On the return voyage, the Treasure Fleet was forced to battle pirates near Sumatra for several months. Eventually, Cheng Hos men managed to capture the pirate leader and take him to the Chinese capital Nanjing, arriving in 1407. Second Voyage (1407-1409) A second voyage of the Treasure Fleet departed on a return trip to India in 1407 but Cheng Ho did not command this voyage. He remained in China to oversee the repair of a temple at the birthplace of a favorite goddess. The Chinese envoys on board helped to ensure the power of a king of Calicut. The fleet returned in 1409. Third Voyage (1409-1411) The fleets third voyage (Cheng Hos second) from 1409 to 1411 consisted of 48 ships and 30,000 men. It followed closely the route of the first voyage but the Treasure Fleet established entrepots (warehouses) and stockades along their route to facilitate trade and storage of goods. On the second voyage, the King of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) was aggressive; Cheng Ho defeated the kings forces and captured the king to take him to Nanjing. Fourth Voyage (1413-1415) In late 1412, Cheng Ho was ordered by Zhu Di to makeà a fourthà expedition. It wasnt until late 1413 or early 1414 that Cheng Ho embarked on his expedition with 63 ships and 28,560 men. The goal of this trip was to reach the Persian Gulf at Hormuz, known to be a city of amazing wealth and goods, including pearls and precious stones much coveted by the Chinese emperor. In the summer of 1415, the Treasure Fleet returned with a bounty of trade goods from the Persian Gulf. Detachments of this expedition sailed south along the eastern coast of Africa almost as far south as Mozambique. During each of Cheng Hos voyages, he brought back diplomats from other countries or encouraged ambassadors to go to the capital Nanjing on their own. Fifth Voyage (1417-1419) The fifth voyage was ordered in 1416 to return the ambassadors who had arrived from other countries. The Treasure Fleet departed in 1417 and visited the Persian Gulf and the east coast of Africa, returning envoys along the way. They returned in 1419. Sixth Voyage (1421-22) A sixth voyage was launched in the spring of 1421 and visited Southeast Asia, India, the Persian Gulf, and Africa. By this time, Africa was considered Chinas El Dorado, a source of riches. Cheng Ho returned in late 1421 but the remainder of the fleet didnt arrive in China until 1422. Emperor Zhu Di died in 1424 and his son Zhu Gaozhi became emperor. He canceled the voyages of the Treasure Fleets and ordered shipbuilders and sailors to stop their work and return home. Cheng Ho was appointed military commander of Nanjing. Seventh Voyage (1431-1433) The leadership of Zhu Gaozhi did not last long. He died in 1426 at the age of 26. His son and Zhu Dis grandson Zhu Zhanji took Zhu Gaozhis place. Zhu Zhanji was much more like his grandfather than his father was and in 1430 he resumed the Treasure Fleet voyages by ordering Cheng Ho to resume his duties as admiral and makeà a seventhà voyage in an attempt to restore peaceful relations with the kingdoms of Malacca and Siam. It took a year to gear up for the voyage which departed as a large expedition with 100 ships and 27,500 men. On the return trip inà 1433,à Cheng Ho is believed to have died; others state that he died in 1435 after the return to China. Nonetheless, the era of exploration for China was soon over as the followingà emperorsà prohibited trade and even the construction of ocean-going vessels. Its likely that a detachment of one of Cheng Hos fleets sailed to northern Australia during one of the seven voyages basedà uponà the Chinese artifacts found as well as the oral history of the Aborigine. After the seven voyages of Cheng Ho and the Treasure Fleets, Europeans began to make headway toward China. In 1488 Bartolomeu Dias rounded Africas Cape of Good Hope, in 1498 Vasco da Gama reached Chinas favorite trading city of Calicut, and in 1521 Ferdinand Magellan finally reached Asia by sailing west. Chinas superiority in the Indian Ocean was unrivaled until the 16th century when the Portuguese arrived and established their colonies along the rim of the Indian Ocean.

Death Penalty Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Death Penalty - Research Paper Example The dark chapters of dealing with the provisions of death penalty must be removed from legal literature once for all. Much ambiguity and hesitation exists in the area of awarding the capital punishment in USA. Elucidating the scenario Franklin E. Zimring writes, ââ¬Å"Some States reverse eight out of every ten death sentences on appeal, while other States affirm eight out of ten. And the current system of American capital punishment seems to be hated in equal measure by the opponents of capital punishment system and by those who support execution but desire more certainty and less delay.â⬠(8) The undercurrent of displeasure against the death penalty is evident. The protagonists who insist for retaining the death penalty quote the progress made in the field of scientific research for investigation of crimes. DNA testing and other methods help to establish the guilt beyond doubt. The chances of innocent persons put to death are impossibility. The advocates of death penalty have certain strong arguments that appeal to the emotions. One of them is the grave issue of terrorism. The need to provide exemplary punishment to such enemies of humankind cannot be brushed aside easily. Some merit exists in the above arguments, and yet an enlightened society has to rely on options other than death penalty, which is a cruel procedure. It is the duty of the state to make a condemned prisoner a worthy individual. Since death penalty applies closure to the life-force of the convict, where is the chance for him to reform? The family members undergo untold miseries and some of them will suffer from life-long shocks that may result in severe physical and psychological problems. Instead, prosecutors need to have a variety of other types of punishments to teach a hard lesson to the one condemned to death sentence. This is a better procedure to serve the ends of justice. Punishment should be appropriate to the magnitude of the crime. Someone
